regard to the quality of the Turkish troops, the formidable nature of
the enemy's position, and the powers of resistance that were still poss
essed by the garrison of Kut-al-Amara,* it may safely be conjectured
that he would not have urged his subordinate to deliver an immediate
attack. But Sir John did not possess this knowledge, and as is usual
m war was obliged to base vital decisions on inaccurate premises.,
It haa been pointed out that he was also in bad health, and actually
toe was invalided on the 18th January and replaced by Lieutenant-
general Sir Percy Lake, the Chief of the General Staff in India.
* The place surrendered only on the 29tli April.
