cultivation. Low ridge running W. begins on N. It is
1-2 m. from the track.
Between this point and m. 57 are several water-courses.
Apparently in this neighbourhood (2J hrs. ride from

el-Ibreh) lies the spring of 'Ain Tineh, under the
ridge to the N., ^ hr. ride WSW. of it are said to
lie the four springs of 'Ain el-G-hassau, lukewarm and
sulphurous.
To SS W. from 'Ain el-Ghassan, about one day's march distant, is seen
a hill called Tel Tartar, in which a tepid sulphurous spring takes
its rise. This spring was believed by traveller of 1880 to be
a head of the Tartar River. Other springs feeding the Tartar-
seem to lie near Beled Sinjar.

El-Khan, ruins of a large khan beside the track. Springs
in the neighbourhood called El-Hararat, or 'Ain el-
Khan. In 1906 the Mendikan tribe was encamped here.
The bulk of the tribe are Yezidi by religion, but the
Sheikhs and some of the families are Moslem. Ground
from about here to Beled Sinjar was reported as very
soft in January 1880, owing to the melting of snow on
the hills.

Et-Toq. These hills run in a line parallel with the

This volume is A Handbook of Mesopotamia, Volume III, Central Mesopotamia with Sourthern Kurdistan and the Syrian Desert (Admiralty War Staff Intelligence Division, January, 1917), covering the Tigris and Euphrates from Baghdad and Fellūjeh [Fallujah] to Mosul and Meskeneh [Maskanah], the Lesser Zāb, the country east of the Tigris towards the Persian frontier, and the routes running westward from the Euphrates valley across the Syrian Desert. The volume was prepared on behalf of the Admiralty and War Office, and appears to be based on official and unofficial publications and maps which are cited in a bibliographical section in the volume. This volume was supplemented with corrections and additions in June 1918 (see IOR/L/MIL/17/15/41/5).
The volume includes a note on confidentiality, a title page, 'Note', 'Abbreviations'. There is a page of 'Contents' which includes the following sections:
