RANIYEH—KOWANDUZ (53 m.)
Via the Nalkewan Valley

This route is simply a mule-track for most of its length, and is
very rough going at many points. It is closed by snow at the
Gurmanjan Pass for three months in the year. Water is plentiful,
but supplies scarce, except in the first and last few miles. Fuel is
plentiful except between m. 20 and m. 30.

0 Bauiyeh (alt. 1,245 ft.). Ascend a wide grassy valley by
a broad track.
Skirt some rocky spurs from the r. The valley narrows
to about f m.
Rocky spur to r.
The ridge, of vertical sheets of rock, rises 1,000 ft. ^ m. to
r. To 1. the hills are also rugged, but more rounded.
Valley narrower and more stony as ascent is made.
Dalaran, Zeban, and Hajireh, small villages along the
ridge to r.
Pass gap in the ridge to 1., 300 yds. wide and ^ m. long,
through which flows the Serkupkau Su, 50 ft. wide and
18 in. deep (May 1888), over a stony bed 200-300 yds.
wide. It enters the upper part of the Eaniyeh Plain,
and joins the Khudran there. A large irrigation channel
takes water in the direction of Raniyeh. Neraban is a
small village at the mouth of the gap.

This volume is A Handbook of Mesopotamia, Volume III, Central Mesopotamia with Sourthern Kurdistan and the Syrian Desert (Admiralty War Staff Intelligence Division, January, 1917), covering the Tigris and Euphrates from Baghdad and Fellūjeh [Fallujah] to Mosul and Meskeneh [Maskanah], the Lesser Zāb, the country east of the Tigris towards the Persian frontier, and the routes running westward from the Euphrates valley across the Syrian Desert. The volume was prepared on behalf of the Admiralty and War Office, and appears to be based on official and unofficial publications and maps which are cited in a bibliographical section in the volume. This volume was supplemented with corrections and additions in June 1918 (see IOR/L/MIL/17/15/41/5).
