Summit of spur (alt. 1,760 ft.). Fine view of plain of
Kaniyeh and Marga.
Turbeh, 100 well-built houses. Water from a large spring.
Eich gravelly soil; wheat cultivation and orchards.
Pai Euh, large village in orchards and vineyards, on
opposite bank of the Zab where it enters the Tang-i-
Sheikh Ismail.
Easy broad track with gradual descent.
Marga, 200 houses on the lower spurs of Kurkur Dagh
is 10 m. to the E. It is the seat of a Mudir under
Qal'ah Dlzeh. Large mound and ruins in plain below it.
Koute to Banah (48 m.), difficult up to Banah Su.
Eeach plain, the river 1 m. to r. Good grass; soil a rich
loam. No trees.
Cross small stream from 1.
Chailasura, 30 huts, ^ m. distant on 1. bank of the
Lesser Zab, here 150-200 yds. wide with rapid current.

cultivation on the upper slopes of the Kutsrut Dagh.

Ford the Klmdran Eiver, 60 yds. wide, 3 ft. deep. Swift
current. Probably unfordable in h.w.

Numerous mounds in this neigbourhood.
Quru Shina on the r., 40 poor Kurdish huts.
The Lesser Zab is now 1 m. to the r.
Some rice cultivation. Track swampy in places.
Pass Bazmnsian, 40 huts, near a mound.

Pass Gulek, 60 huts, to 1.

This volume is A Handbook of Mesopotamia, Volume III, Central Mesopotamia with Sourthern Kurdistan and the Syrian Desert (Admiralty War Staff Intelligence Division, January, 1917), covering the Tigris and Euphrates from Baghdad and Fellūjeh [Fallujah] to Mosul and Meskeneh [Maskanah], the Lesser Zāb, the country east of the Tigris towards the Persian frontier, and the routes running westward from the Euphrates valley across the Syrian Desert. The volume was prepared on behalf of the Admiralty and War Office, and appears to be based on official and unofficial publications and maps which are cited in a bibliographical section in the volume. This volume was supplemented with corrections and additions in June 1918 (see IOR/L/MIL/17/15/41/5).

The volume includes a note on confidentiality, a title page, 'Note', 'Abbreviations'. There is a page of 'Contents' which includes the following sections:
