a report of 1911.
From Qizil Ribat to Pai-Taq (see m. 143, below) there is an alterna
tive route practicable only for lightly laden mules and donkeys
(65 m.). Difficulty would be experienced in crossing the Ab-i-Dereh
Sarab-i-Garm, and Ab-i-QaPah Shahin for a day or two after rains
The water from the Tangab stream is bad, but otherwise drinkable
water is obtainable everywhere. No fuel except in the ShahKtih
(Dar-i-Baru). Grazing is plentiful from January to March, after
that a little only is available in the mountains. In the Dira
plain small quantities of supplies and fruit are available in
season, and from Dira to Pai-Taq supplies are plentiful. Inter
mediate distances are uncertain ; Pavanmaka is about 33 m.

From Qizil Ifcibat to Pavanmaka, the general direction is E.
Nomad camps on the route in spring. The track is at
first over fiat country, then over rising and stony ground
between northern and middle portions of the Baghcheli
Hills. At the frontier the ground is broken and cut up by
ravines, and this terrain continues up to the foot of the
Gamakavu and Shah Kuh, where the ravine of the
Tangab stream is followed straight through the hills to
Pavanmaka. The water of the Tangab is indigestible and
sometimes oily and sulphurous. The Pavanmaka gorge
is approached over gypsum hills ; going is very bad and
treacherous.
Pavanmaka gorge. Here the Tangab ravine takes a turn N.
inito the gorge which is entirely enclosed by precipices.
No permanent habitation here. The Tangab ravine is
then followed out of the hill. Thence the track makes
across the valley towards the Bazi Daraz range. It passes
by undulating ground to the water of Mai Quri Khan.
The track then follows this stream, but keeps above it, on
the level plain, as the ravine is deep and precipitous in
places. It then passes through the outer gypsum range
into a narrow valley called Pushteh, and strikes across
the ridges of the Bazi Daraz. Here it is a very bad and
stony road. Water is to be found between Pavanmaka
and Bazi Daraz, but not in the latter region.
Bira, a fertile plain at the foot of the Bazi Daraz. Villages
and nomad camps. In the authority followed Dira plain
is given at 42 m., and Pai-Taq at 50 m., but the total
distance given at the head of the route is 65 m.
From Dira the track goes NE. It passes round the end of
