E1VER ROUTES
Ehn'bbaz, joins the river. The water is bitter, as is another
small stream 10 min. ride farther on, at which animals will
not drink.
Qasr Eeit Aiyub, fort on river. Its position on a pro
montory would appear to command the reach below to the
top of Filuwi Island.
Imam Sheikh Sa'di, Moslem shrine.
Munakhireh Qasr, fort.
Beit Sa'adeh, village.
El-Qasr, fort.
Jerifeh Island, If m. long and very narrow, near r.
bank.
El-'Aliyeh, small village. Opposite here are bad rapids
between two naurs, with a rock in the middle.
Gharraf or Elkaraf Island,
Baghdadiyeh village, standing a little back from the
river.
At Baghdadiyeh Fahd Bey of the Amarat owns some pro
perty and has planted a palm garden,
Nawas Islands, very small, near r. bank. In Jan.-Feb.
1903 the speed of the stream, which had been about 2 m.p.h.,
increased to 4 m.p.h.
Khan Eaghdadiyeh. A khan was being built here in
1908. There is no village, the inhabitants dwelling in caves
in the precipitous sides (200 ft.) of a gorge which runs back
into the plateau. This cave-dwelling is a marked feature in
the gorges of the bluffs from here up to Hadlseh ; no houses
are seen on the bluffs.
Jibbeh fort. Zaptieh post near the river, E. of road. See
p. 17 on route to Damascus
Jibbeh Island, with large village near S. end. Ferry.
From here up to Hadlseh a few palm gardens are passed.
Past the island the channel went to the r. in 1903.

This volume is A Handbook of Mesopotamia, Volume III, Central Mesopotamia with Sourthern Kurdistan and the Syrian Desert (Admiralty War Staff Intelligence Division, January, 1917), covering the Tigris and Euphrates from Baghdad and Fellūjeh [Fallujah] to Mosul and Meskeneh [Maskanah], the Lesser Zāb, the country east of the Tigris towards the Persian frontier, and the routes running westward from the Euphrates valley across the Syrian Desert. The volume was prepared on behalf of the Admiralty and War Office, and appears to be based on official and unofficial publications and maps which are cited in a bibliographical section in the volume. This volume was supplemented with corrections and additions in June 1918 (see IOR/L/MIL/17/15/41/5).
