On the 1. bank also Jebur form the bulk of the scanty settled
population. N. of the Hamrln range, in the plains between the
neighbourhood of the river and the mountains, are tribes of nomadic
ipearjlt or gemi-nomadic Kurds (see vol. i, p. 68, &c.), mostly well armed and
'H kS given to brigandage. In the neighbourhood of Erbil and between the
Great Zab and Mosul there are a number of Chaldaean Christian
i fomtrl; villages and Yezidi communities.

Lower end of Kuweir I. Other islands occur in this
neighbourhood, carrying small trees or bushes. Ruins are
visible from the river lying at some distance inland.
Kuweir village is about ^ m. farther up the island. In
this neighbourhood are some small shrub-covered islands.
Beit el-Khalifeh, ruin of large vaulted hall, one of the
palaces of old Samarra.
Lower end of large island stretching N. for v 2-3 m.
El-Ma shuqah, ruin (? of castle), in the valley of the river.
Little is left but the buttresses of the walls.
Lands of Bisat village (see m. 5^) begin in this neigh
bourhood.
Tel 'Alij (' Nose-bag Mound'), large artificial mound about
2 m. from river, surrounded by a moat, outside of which are

This volume is A Handbook of Mesopotamia, Volume III, Central Mesopotamia with Sourthern Kurdistan and the Syrian Desert (Admiralty War Staff Intelligence Division, January, 1917), covering the Tigris and Euphrates from Baghdad and Fellūjeh [Fallujah] to Mosul and Meskeneh [Maskanah], the Lesser Zāb, the country east of the Tigris towards the Persian frontier, and the routes running westward from the Euphrates valley across the Syrian Desert. The volume was prepared on behalf of the Admiralty and War Office, and appears to be based on official and unofficial publications and maps which are cited in a bibliographical section in the volume. This volume was supplemented with corrections and additions in June 1918 (see IOR/L/MIL/17/15/41/5).
The volume includes a note on confidentiality, a title page, 'Note', 'Abbreviations'. There is a page of 'Contents' which includes the following sections:
