If it would not too much inconvenience you tp come another time,I
agree that it would be far better to postpone the ceremonial Durbar A public or private audience held by a high-ranking British colonial representative (e.g. Viceroy, Governor-General, or member of the British royal family). .
The two reasons for your coming would be incongruous and it is
better that it should be understood that you have come for the
specific reason of delivering^the warning.
I do not think there would be eny harm in your staying
longer than a day in Bahrain,except the possibility of the Bahrain-
is forcing a visit.In this connection however,we h^vo now got some
grounds for a suitable reply. As already reported to you,the
Sahrainis made a considerable demonstration some d^ s baci: f shut
Bazaar/and forcibly released from a fidawi, a m n who had been
ill-treated. This action considerably frightened the Shaiks.Jh.
l^asa sent Shaik Hamad to me to ask how he should deal with the
situation.I declined officially to interefere but unofficially told
Hamad that they would bo most unwise to further force the situation
and should try to find means of pacifying the peonle . The outcome
was that Qosaibi,Yusuf Xanoo and Kuhamna Sharif were asked to
go with soma representatives of the Bahrainis to interview the
ohaiks. '?he Bahrainis made several demands,which after about two
' la ys delay and a meeting of all A1 iChilifeh / were granted by 3haik
Jasa with the exception of one,which referred to a religious tax on
Shiahs.The 3haik; at first made several stu )id alterations in the
conditions,purely with the obr'ect of saving his f'ce and appe aring
not to give way to the Bahrainis,but finally modified^Ai^
I understand that the Bahrainis demanded the following
points v/hich were conceded, though whether they will be carried
out is another matter.
I. No one except the Ruler and Jhaik Hamad,to decide cases or
to have the right to punish in any way.
