From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. , dated 1 July 1854. Kemball’s letter is a report on the ruling families and predominant tribes of the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , as requested by Government (folio 253). The body of Kemball’s letter includes an overview of the ports of the Persian coast between Bushire and Bundar Abbas [Bandar-e ʻAbbās], namely Congoon [Bandar-e Kangan], Asseloo [Bandar-e Asaluyeh], Nabend [Nāband], Nukheeloo [Nakhīlū], Cheroo [Chīrū], Khelat [Kelat], Charrack [Bandar-e Chārak], Mogoo [Moghūyeh] and Lingah [Bandar e-Lengeh]. The principal places of the Arab coast are covered by a series of enclosures:
1) Report on Muscat (folios 257-59), with details on the Imam of Muscat Syed Saeed ben Sultan bin Ahmed [Sa‘id bin Sulṭān], his hiers and relatives, place of residence, political status and dependencies, annual revenue, nature and extent of territory, natural and industrial resources, climate and population;
2) Report on Bahrain (folios 259-61), with details of Shaikh Mahomed ben Khuleefah [Muḥammad bin Khalīfah Āl Khalīfah], his hiers and relatives, familial rivals, political status, annual revenue, nature and extent of territory, natural and industrial resources, climate and population;
3) Report on the Maritime Arab States (folios 261-62), with reference to their independence and feudal obligation to the Wahabee [Wahhābi] ruler, the nature and extent of their territories, natural and industrial resources, routes, and climate;
4) Report on Kuwait (folios 262-63), with details of Shaikh Jabir bin Abdullah bin Subah [Jaber bin ‘Abdullāh Al-Sabah], his hiers and relatives, annual income, political situation, and resources;
5) General Remarks (folios 263-64), relating to religious constitution, governance, justice, education, vaccination measures, and prevalent diseases.
