About this item
- Content
The letter is a covering letter, enclosing a letter received by Anderson from Major Atkins Hamerton, Her Majesty’s Consul and the Honourable Company’s Agent in the dominions of His Highness the Imam of Muscat, dated 9 August 1854 (folios 215-16). In his letter Hamerton writes that the Beni boo Ali tribe, responsible for the plunder of the Fath-el-Khyer , do not come under the jurisdiction of the Imam of Muscat, and that, as far as he is aware, they are not answerable to anyone’s authority but their own. Hamerton adds that he fears that, if the British authorities took punitive action against the Beni boo Ali tribe, this could lead to the murder of the crews of stricken vessels in future, whereas the crews of the Centaur and Fath-el-Khyer , though they lost their cargo, were allowed to escape with their lives.
