I am directed by the Right Honorable the Governor in Council to subjoin, for
your information and guidance, copy of a letter from the Private Secretary to the
Most Noble the Governor General, dated the 6th instant, and, in drawing your par
ticular attention to the last clause of the 2nd paragraph, and also to the 3rd para
graph thereof, to request that you will have the goodness to submit to Govern
ment the report required in the latter paragraph.
2. • Copies of the Proclamation referred to, in English, are herewith
enclosed.
3. Copies of the Proclamation in the Vernacular language of your
District will be forwarded to you as soon as received from the Press, and you
will be pleased to have them affixed in the public places of the Cusba Towns
within your range, and one copy at least forwarded to the Village Accountant of
each Village, with directions to read and explain the contents thereof to the in
habitants.

the Governor General to forward to you the enclosed copy of a Proclamation,
which His Lordship has this day caused to be printed and published at this Station,
on the occasion of the Fall of the Town of Sebastopol.

The printed copy of the circular (no.3359 of 1855), dated 13 November 1855, draws attention to a copy of a letter, included on the same printed page as the circular, from F Courtenay, Private Secretary to the Governor General, to the Chief Secretary of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. , dated 6 November 1855. Courtenay’s letter announces the fall of Sevastopol, requesting that a proclamation (enclosed with the original letter) be printed and published as widely as possible in English and any vernacular languages. Notes in the margins of Anderson’s letter indicate that the Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. received 500 copies of the Proclamation in Persian, 200 in Arabic, and 100 in English.
