Hy dear Cox,
I have been put on another Job outside
the Gazetteer, one however whioh works in with one of
my appendices, viz, that on Religions: the subject is
pan-Islamio adtivity whioh is supposed to be in full
swing at present.
The object of the pan-Islauaio propapanda, as you
are aware is to get the Sultan of Turkey recognised
by Huliammadans in all countries as head of the faith.
Work seems to have begun in India between 1874 and 1878
and to have been continued at intervals ever since, I
am now arranging and abstracting an enormous collection
of files on the subject belonging to no less than three
Departaents,
I wonder if you could find out anything in the
Oulf, It is probable of course that the propaganda hard
ly exists ^as not being required, in Arabia, and
on the Persian side I should fancy there was no change
of success as Shi'ahs would hardly admit the Khalifate
of one not descended from Muhaioinad* But probably efforts
have been and are being made even in these countries,
I have had occasion to write to Knox about this
matter, in connection with the part played by the
family of IbraJiim of Daurah in the movement, so you
need not refer to him; but perhaps you would not mind
consulting your other officers. Probably the Sheikhs of
Bahrein and Tracial 'Oman and the Sultan of 1 Oman have
been approached on the subject at various times, I
