Certificates of commission for each of Lewis Pelly's appointments in the East India Company: Captain 23 November 1856; Major 18 February 1861; Lieutenant Colonel (Local Rank) 15 November 1861; Lieutenant Colonel (Local Rank) 30 June 1863; Lieutenant Colonel 12 December 1866; Major General 01 April 1882.

The commission certificate for the rank of Captain also records his appointment to this rank in the Bombay Army and dates that appointment as 12 December 1855.
