On the 18th September last all the Indian merchants were taken to the Court
without previous warning and there served with an order to pay conjointly the
sum of £T54,000 per month for four months. Pending compliance with the order,
the merchants were kept in custody, their houses being placed under guards and
all communication with them strictly prohibited. After five days the merchants
agreed to pay $150,000, in all, as they heard that the authorities had confiscated
the property of one of the merchants named Mahomed Sachoo amounting to
$200,000. The sum was made up as follows :—-
