drove off a flock of 40 goats. A pursuit party
from Peiwar village came up with the raiders
near Spingawi, recovered the goats, and killed
one of the raiders, who has been identified
as an outlawed Turi of Peiwar.
On the 2nd December, a raiding gang of
Jajis from Afghanistan made a raid on the
flocks of the villagers of Burk hi, which were
grazing on the hills near the border, and
carried off 48 goats. On the 9th December,
another gang of Jaji raiders made an unsuc
cessful attack upon the Hamza Khel Turi
encampments at Parwazgai.
In spite of letters written by the Political
Agent to the Governors of Aryob and Khost
(see last Journal), the malicious pulling down
of cairns and flagposts, erected by the Survey
parties in Kurram, still continues.
On the 6th December, a gang of Khojal
Khel and Taji Khel Wazirs raided ten Ghilzai
camels near Gaura Oba in Lower Kurram.
On the night of the 18th December, a raid
ing gang of Jajis from Afghanistan attacked
the hamlet of Saiyid Baza at Boshera in Upper
Kurram. The villagers drove off the raiders,
but Saiyid Baza was wounded.
On the 10th December, a satisfactory
settlement of all pending charges against the
Para Chamkanni tribe (see last Journal) was
arrived at, and all the prisoners were released.
On the 27th December, a gang of Kabul
Khel Wazirs, led by a man named Gulbat,
attacked a Ghilzai encampment within the
borders of Lower Kurram. The Kurram
Militia from the Shabak and Chapri posts
went to the assistance of the Ghilzais, and in
the fight which ensued three men of the Militia
were killed, while the Wazirs are said to have
had eleven killed and six wounded. The attack
was due to a grazing dispute between the
Ghilzais and Wazirs, and had no political
significance.
W aziristan .—Towards the end of Novem
ber, a gang of Tori Khels raided the cattle of
some Gallashai Mahsuds of Shakari in
independent territory. A pursuit party of
Mahsuds recovered the cattle, but the raiders
carried away four Mahsud women who were
grazing the cattle, and whom they subse
quently exchanged for the cattle raided by
the Jalal Khels (see Journal for October).
The Chief Commissioner, North-West
Frontier Province, has reported that enquiries
show that Captain Donaldson’s murder (see
last Journal under Bannn) was connected
with the murders of Captain Bowring and
Colonel Harman; that it was inspired, not
solely by blind fanaticism, but by a desire for
revenge for the punishment of the relatives of
the murderer of Colonel Harman, and it was also
