of Birmal and Zadran, for the purpose of con
veying to them the Amir’s orders that they
are to stop trying to stir up trouble against
the British Government.
A Daur Mulla, who is in receipt of an
allowance from Government, has just returned
from visiting Birmal, and states that there has
been a serious breach between the Mulla of
Karhogha and the Mulla Powindah on the
one hand, and Hamzulla, the Malang, and the
Khalifa of Birmal on the other. It originated
in the jealousy and disputes existing between
Hamzulla and the Mulla Powindah; when
the Mulla of Karbogha decided in favour of
the Mulla Powindah, Hamzulla announced
openly that he ceased to count himself a
murid of the Karbogha Mulla and sent hack
the tokens of muridi which he had received
from him. These squabbles probably account
for the request recently preferred to the Politi
cal Agent by the Mulla Powindah for assistance
to drive the Mulla Hamzulla out of the
country.
The same informant saw in the Malang’s
house a verse written in Pashtu, to the elfect
that the

of Urghun and the Khalifa of
Birmal were restraining the Malang from
making ghaza on the British. The Malang
on being questioned about this verse, said it
was quite true; that he had been prepared
to lead a ghaza, and would have started
it this hot weather, only that the

of
Urghun and the Khalifa of Birmal had told
him not to, as there was now friendship
between the Amir and the British. He also
admitted that he had intended to join in the
threatened “Jehad” last February (see Journal
for that month), and came for that purpose to
Madda Khel country, but saw it was no uso
and went back to Birmal.
There was at first considerable excite
ment in Mahsud country over the death of
Kastor, ex-Jemadar of the Southern Waziris-
tan Militia, and his two brothers, also ex-
Militiamen, who were shot when raiding sheep
near Sarwekai (see last Journal), and the
affair was represented to the Mulla Powindah
as a wanton outrage by the Militia. The
Mulla restrained the wilder spirits of the
tribe, and when the facts were known, there
was a general feeling of relief at the death
of three of a family who, it was feared, were
likely to embroil the tribe with Government.
There does not seem to be any general resent
ment on the part of the tribe against Govern
ment, but there is undoubtedly considerable
feeling against Mohibulla, the Afridi Subadar,
who led the Militia in the attack. The success 5
of the affair is very gratifying and is extremelv
creditable to the Militia, and especially to
Subadar Mohibulla. This was the first outbreak
on the part of the dismissed Militiamen, and it
