About this record
- Content
Copy of dispatch No. 1 from HM Chargé d’Affaires to Persia [Iran], Henry Willock, in Tehran, to HM Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, George Canning, of 7 January 1825. The letter originally enclosed a copy of Willock’s dispatch No. 27 to the Governor-General of the Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. of Fort William, Lord Amherst, of 23 December 1824 (now catalogued as IOR/L/PS/9/70/7). Willock indicates that in the enclosed letter he has recommended to Lord Amherst an ‘investigation’ of the countries between the Caspian and the Indus, as he believes that recent Russian missions in the area, including the communications of an individual employed by Russia named Meerza Allee Akber [Mirza ‘Ali Akbar Hizarah] with Runjeet Sing [Ranjit Singh], suggest a desire by Russia to extend its influence in ‘the East’.
This document was originally enclosed in Willock’s letter to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. of the East India Company of 8 February 1825 (IOR/L/PS/9/70/5).
