Clear the line.
As machine guns and rifles are sighted to take mark VII ammunition, it
has now been decided to use this mark ammunition. Please therefore arrange
for the 4,854 boxes of mark VII ammunition to he despatched, and also please
; let me know how arrangements will be made for further supplies of this
ammunition.
This refers to my 1658-Ord. (Dy. No. S.-29881) of 7th December.

In order that the situation as regards wireless may be cleared up please
say how many pack and waggon stations should in your opinion e mam am
by you for first line work and for which drivers and personnel must also
be maintained.
According to our calculations you should now have 4 pack and 4
^waggon stations, and the personnel and horses for these should he fairly com
plete, any deficiencies at the present time being in course of being made good.
In this connection please see my 29846 of December 7th.
You should also have in second lines 4 pack sets and these are probably
still serviceable.
One waggon set in addition, which was asked for in your C,-K.-86—9
(Dy. No. S.-29109), dated November 30th, was shipped on December 8th by
‘‘Begum 5 ’ and 2 pack sets should reach you within 3 weeks which arc due
from England,
Finally, the complete pack troop demanded in your G, K.-889 (Dy. No.
of December 7th has been asked for (Dy. No. S-30419) from the
War Office.
Should the War Office supply complete pack troop, will any further per
sonnel he required by you from India ; and in the event of pack troops not
being forthcoming, what would he your detailed total requirements ?
The above refers to your G. K.-931 (Dy. No. S.-30357) of December
10 th,

The volume contains a chronological list of brief summaries of papers relating to the activities of the Indian Expeditionary Force D (also known as the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force) between 1 and 15 December 1915. This is accompanied by appendices containing copies and extracts of these papers, which include letters, memoranda, telegrams, and intelligence summaries and appreciations [reports] from the Directorate of Military Operations.

A summary of the contents of this volume can be found at folios 7-9. The volume mostly relates to:

  • General Charles Townshend’s withdrawal to Kut-al-Amarah [al-Kut], attacks by Turkish [Ottoman] forces on the town, and plans for its relief
  • The supply of river craft for Force D
  • Reinforcements and other personnel for Force D, with particular details of the Meerut and Lahore divisions which are being despatched from France (ff 197-205)
  • Supplies and equipment for Force D
  • Intelligence regarding reinforcements for and movements of Turkish forces, and their equipping by Germany.

The following tables appear:

  • Composition of Force D (ff 3-6)
  • Effective strengths of the fighting units of Force D (ff 154 and 184).

The vast majority of material in the volume dates from December 1915, but there is also a small amount of material which dates from September and November 1915.
