' As was anticipated in reviewing the trade for 1888-89 the large exports
of that year were not continued, the quantity shipped having fallen materially.

The stimulus given by a continued range of high prices in the European
markets—in great degree speculative—was counteracted by a poor crop. The
prices in London in January and June since 1886 have been in shillings per

in the The trade was much better than in the preceding year, exports from
Burma having greatly increased with large available supplies. From Bengal on
the other hand exports were again smaller than in the previous year, prices, under
the influence of deficient harvests, having reached a level that made trade diffi
cult when prices in Europe did not respond. A glance at the quantities exported
in the last ten years, as given below, shews that this trade does not make much
progress. It is in fact, as has often been remarked before, no longer practically
an Indian monopoly but, rather, subject to very keen competition.

we must also reckon with the competition of other grains which compete with
Indian rice for distillation.

The papers' contents and type vary considerably, but consists primarily of handwritten notes, some of which are organised roughly for individual chapters of the book. The official government reports are primarily government of India balance of trade reports, while published material consisted mainly of academic and non-academic papers on Persian archaeology by members of the Scottish Geographical Magazine and the history of the telegraph published by the Indo-European Telegraph Department.
