About this record

Content

Treatise on logic, physics and metaphysics by Abū ʻAlī al-Ḥusayn ibn ʻAbd Allāh (أبو علي الحسين بن عبد الله), known as Ibn Sīnā (ابن سينا, latinised as Avicenna, d. 1037).

Contents:

  • Chapter One from the Elements of Logic (المقالة الأولى من أصول المنطق, ff. 35v-51v);
  • Chapter One from the Physics (المقالة الأولى من الطبيعيات, ff. 52r-75r);
  • Chapter One from the Metaphysics (المقالة الأولى من الإلهية, ff. 75r-100v).

This copy was made from the Medicean edition published at Rome (in Tipografia Medicea, 1593) as shown most clearly by its inclusion of a concluding note appended to that edition, which warns that the text contains many statements contrary to 'our Catholic faith' (إيماننا القاثوليقي), 'Christian doctrine' (التعليم المسيحي) and 'our Catholic creed' (مذهبنا القاثوليقي, f. 100v, lines 18-25). Like the colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. to text 46 (f. 552r, lines 21-26), which was also copied from the exemplar, the concluding note here was cancelled by the scribe.
