on land. The expenditure on public works, principally
buildings and communications, was £89,342, and the
balance to the credit of the State at the end of July 1878,
when the accounts were closed, amounted to £273,344.
The education of most of the young feudatories has been
hitherto conducted along with that of the Mah&rdja and
some of the Chiefs of the Kdnarese States. Several of
them, however, have been educated at the High School
in Kolhapur, and those that have come of age are now
entrusted with the greater share of the administration of
their estates. The ladies of the Chief’s family, together with
the young wives of some of the feudatories, are being
educated under European supervision at Kolhdpur, and the

progress and of the interest they take in reading and in
needle-work of European fashion, in which they are be
coming proficient. Government have also noticed with
pleasure that this advance upon the ordinary idea cur
rent in a Native Court, as to the fitting employment of a
lady of rank, has been fully appreciated by the young
Chiefs to whom these ladies are related.

at S^tara were severely affected, especial
ly in the southern portions, by the famine of 1876-77 and
the partial failure of crops in 1877-78. The estate of
Jath, in particular, which is now under the direct manage
ment of Government, in consequence of the indebtedness
of the Chief, suffered extensively both as regards crops
and revenue, so as to retard considerably the gradual
liquidation of the Chief’s debts, a task which has now been
rigorously taken in hand by the Political authorities in
charge. The season of 1878-79 was a favourable one, on
the whole, and, as in Kolhdpur, the agricultural pros
pects of this charge showed a decided improvement, as
compared with those of the preceding year. The survey
of Jath was completed, and that of Bhor undertaken.
The returns of the work of the Criminal and Civil Courts
in this group show that the number of offences decreased,
whilst a good many more suits were filed than last year.

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1878-79. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai] in 1879.
