On February 15th, I visited Aleppo by air (6 hours’ fly in a R. E. C. stop
ping for pe.trol at Dain-uz-Zer) unfortunely Brigadier-General Clayton was
unwell and unable to meet me but Lieutenant-Colonel Cornwallis came in his
place and I am indebted to him for much information of value regarding cur
rent developments in Syria which are bound adversely to effect the political
situation in Mesopqtamia on the return to that country of the (group undecy).
class of Baghdadis now in Syria who have tested pleasures of governing Arab
countries at His Majesty’s Treasury’s expense and under the protection of
British troops.
