Thomson, Baku, has forwarded the following, dated the 6 th of January ;—
Begins ,— G4j3. Please inform the Chief of the General Staff, Army Headquar-
ters, Delhi, in reply to his 103514 of 31st December, that provided Malleson
budgets cue month ahead giving estimated expenditure, British Force, Baku can
supply General Malleson with roubles without purchasing same in Persia as
desired* Purchase of roubles for the Government in this area by more than
one person is inadvisable, therefore purchase by the Financial Adviser here is
recommended. Addressed General Headquarters, repeated British Force,
Constantinople.-—The reference above mentioned has not been received
here.

Following, dated the 5th January, has been received by telegraph from the
Political Officer, Anah,

u Gendarmerie Officer, with a message for transmission to Baghdad by tele
graph, has arrived from Dair-Uz-Zer. Gist of message is that Aleppo has informed
Mutossarif of Dair-Uz-Zer that he is under Baghdad now. He is under the
impression that he is to remain and appears to have no orders to return to
Aleppo., By his own statement he has 250 mounted and '220 foot police.
Miscellaneous information regarding bribes is furnished by him and he a tds
that in taxation he can collect 3,000 liras hut for efficient organisation of Dair-
Uz-Zer, he required 5,000 liras to pay troops, also teachers, engineers, etc., two
armoured cars, 15 telephones and two aeroplanes. Despatch cf half of his
gendarmes to Baghdad in exchange for a like number is suggested by him.''’
General Allenby ordered the return to Aleppo of all officials and tioops.
Those orders should be conveyed to officials at Dair-Uz-Zer and acted on, will
you please take any action you think necessary to ensure this.

In order to prevent accumulation of application for leave later on
suggested that time has now arrived to consider this question in case of retired
officers, Indian Army, in this country, some of whom have been for many years
away from United Kingdom. If you agree please state period for which leave
may he granted and are there any concession regarding passages ?
