Standing demands for bacon should now be cancelled in view of early
reduction in strength. Estimate total requirements to maintain o0 oa\s
reserve at end of February will be 150 tons only.
When further information is available demands for supplies required
beyond that period will be submitted.

1. There are at present in connection with protection of railways in thi s
theatre—
(a) On standard gauge system.
One armoured motor battery consisting of 4 cars adapted for running on
the line* and armed with machine guns.
(b) On Metre Gauge line.
Three armoured trains* each having a searchlight and one 12-pounder gun.
2 . Tinder peace conditions I recommend that (a) be retained as at
present and that (b) be abolished and replaced by an armoured motor battery
similar to the one employed on standard gauge, lo provide cars for this
battery sanction is requested to retain for conversion to use on metre gauge 4
of the Austins referred to in my X.-4559, December 19th (Diary No. 10138/).

Your 1552, January 7th.
Am retaining 14th Hussars. The only other British regiment available,
the 13th Hussars, have been abroad two years longer.
The 14th Hussars have already spent 3 hot weathers in this theatre, there
fore on medical grounds I strongly urge that their relief from home be ex
pedited.
Reference X.-4831, January 4th (Diary No. 1134), the 13th Lancers need
not now be retained here.
Reference last paragraph of your wire 1 consider that for training pui*’
poses Divisional Cavalry should he with heir divisions.
