#Sent out during the week, no account yet received.
5. Weekly Tonnage—The total tonnage for the week in grain, bhoosa,
and firewood is 1,144 tons, giving a daily average of 163 tons.
Outlook — Bhoosa. —There will be a marked increase in the amount of
bhoosa during the coming week, and arrangements have been concluded to
bring in 600 tons a month for the next two months from the Euphrates area.
A convoy of donkeys belonging to the Government is proceeding there on
the 18th, takiag the necessary bags with them.
GVtfiw.—Steps are being taken by the Political Department to open the
country round Diwanieh, Afej, and Dignara, which will bring considerable
stores of grain into the market.
Low Water. —Owing to the reduction of water in the Euphrates it has
been found necessary to send the water down the Hindieh branch for longer
periods each fortnight necessitating lighter loading of the boats on the Hillah
Branch.
Firewood. —Large quantities may be expected as soon as it is possible to
get barges between Kutuniyah and the Advanced Base running more regu
larly.
There should also be a steady increase in the Baqubah area.
To relieve the civil population in Baghdad, the Military Governor has been
asked to agree to arrange for Government Wood Yards where firewood will be
sold to the public at a controlled price.
It will also be necessary to allot a certain amount of water transport to
bring in the supply for these yards. Owing to the entire land and water trans
port having been taken up by the Government Service, the position of this
commodity has become rather acute.
Civil Population of Samarrah. —It has been found necessary to assist
the Political representative in Samarrah in arranging grain for the civil popu
lation, 14 tons of rice have this week been sent forward to meet the urgent
requirements
Milling. —Mills at Ealliyah, Museyib, Hillah, Baghdad, and Baqubah will
be put in running order and flour will be made from local wheat.
Dates. —A supply of dates is being arranged for in Baqubah and Baghdad
to meet the increase scale for horses, which comes to about 10 tons per day.
