I.—F OETIFICATIONS.
i- Bombay .—The proposed Batteries are in much the
same state as they were in last year. Preparations have been
made to put in the foundations of the Middle Ground Battery ;
a trench in the rubble filling has been excavated, measuring
about 171,000 cubic feet, and nearly 1,000 concrete blocks,
averaging 3 tons each, are ready. The erection of a radial
overhead travelling crane, for laying the blocks in position,
has been sanctioned. The Workshop Pier, constructed of
hand-packed rubble, with kandkie facing, has been completed;
its length is 827 feet, and breadth 23f feet at top. Two lines
of permanent rails have been laid along the whole Pier. A
stone landing has been constructed at the head of the Pier.

footway, 5 feet wide, has been made up to the heights, and
500 lineal feet of scarping has been effected. The Ordnance
Department having run short of the stock of blasting powder,
the Executive Engineer was supplied with powder of greater
cost: this will lead to an excess on the estimate. The outlay
to the close of 1869-70 was Rs. 14,210.
