From—The Quartermaster General in India,
To—The Director, Royal Indian Marine, Bombay.
Your Q.-281 of 28th. It is undesirable at present to divert for other purposes any of the ships allotted for Force “ B It may, however, be necessary
to despatch urgently a fresh force of one infantry brigade, one company sappers and miners, and one mountain battery, with 650 mules and 470 camels as
transport.
Please wire how soon ships could be made ready for this force, diverting if necessary, but not refitting, ships already allotted to the next convoy.

Telegram No. Q.-286, dated 30th September 1914.

To—The Quartermaster General in India.
Your 53-84-W.S. Ships at present allotted to Force “ Ain next convoy are all fitted for cavalry or artillery and are. unsuited for. special force
mentioned in your 53-84-W.S. of 29th. Caledonia, Atalantian, Ionian and Neuralia are expected here on 8th and 9th October and with the addition of Ujain,
which vessel is being handed over by Admiralty at Karachi on 4th October, could take the whole of this force with little renting. These vessels, however,,
will require coal, water and rations and cannot therefore leave before 12th. With reference to Naval Commander-in-Chiel’s telegram 27th September to Marine,,
Simla, regarding escort Force “ A would special force above mentioned require separate escort.

Telegram P., No. 1085, dated 28th September 1914. (Diary No. 4660.)
From*—The Secretary of State for India,
To—The Viceroy (Army Department).
It has been decided to take no action for a couple of days, though the situation is still acute. Be prepared in the meantime to act as proposed.
This is with reference to my telegram No. 1062.
