I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter No. 1226 P,
accompanied by a letter from His Excellency the Yiceroy for His Highness
the Sultan of Muscat.
2. I had the honor to deliver His Excellency the Viceroy’s letter person
ally to Syed Toorkee on the 30th June, and at the same interview I com
municated to His Highness the message of His Excellency the Viceroy and
Governor General in Council on the subject of the Zanzibar subsidy, in
accordance with the terms of the second paragraph of your letter under
acknowledgment.
3. His Highness the Sultan expressed his gratitude and gratification, and
has desired me to transmit the accompanying

Sir Bartle Frere, already advanced His Highness the Sultan the sum of
dollars (40,000) forty thousand, and at the expiry of a fortnight will on the
same authority pay the further sum of (20,000) twenty thousand dollars. If
no serious objection exists, I would respectfully suggest that the Political
Agent should now be empowered to complete the arrears of subsidy by a
further payment of (40,000) forty thousand dollars at the expiration of the
half-year in August next, and to continue the payment of the subsidy by
half-yearly instalments of ( 20 , 000 ) twenty thousand dollars under the terms of
your letter under reply and until further orders.

Translation of a letter from Syed Toorkee bin Saeed bin Sultan to His Excellency the
Viceroy and Governor General, dated 1290 A. H.=1873.
The object of my addressing this letter to Your Excellency is to enquire
after your health. May the Almighty God keep you safe from all the evils of
this world. At an auspicious time Your Excellency’s kind letter reached me,
by which firm friendship has been proved. I greatly rejoice to learn of Your

This item consists of copies of a Political Despatch from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dated 25 August 1873 and received via Brindisi on 22 September 1873, forwarding copies of papers relating to payment of the subsidy to Muscat and the allowances offered by the Sultan of Muscat [Sultan Turki bin Sa'id Al Bu Sa'id] to his nephew (and former Sultan) Syed Salim [Salim bin Thuwayni Al Bu Sa'id] (who had rebelled against Turki and attempted to seize power) and to his brother Abdool Azeez [Sayyid Abdul Aziz bin Sa'id Al Bu Sa'id]. The suggested arrangement is a payment of a monthly sum of $300 each to Syed Salim and Abdool Azeez on condition that they reside in British territory and do not interfere in the affairs of Muscat, and that the stipends should be deducted from the Zanzibar subsidy. The despatch is in continuation of correspondence ending with the telegram to the Secretary of State from the Viceroy, No. 1537, of 10 July 1873.
