Copies of six letters mainly concerning the French Revolutionary Wars:

1. Four letters from Sir William Sidney Smith, Commander of the British naval squadron in the Levant A geographical area corresponding to the region around the eastern Mediterranean Sea. , to John Barker, Proconsul in Aleppo, and Nicholas Ducci, Agent, sent from HMS Tigre and dated 28 August-10 September 1799. The letters describe developments in the French Revolutionary Wars in Italy, a British and Ottoman defeat to French forces at Aboukir [Abu Qir], and plans for another joint assault on the French forces occupying Egypt.

2. An extract of a letter from John Barker to William Sidney Smith, sent from Aleppo and dated 26 September 1799. The letter covers subjects including: the reaction in Aleppo to the defeat at Aboukir; news of the British occupation of Seringapatam which Barker has disseminated in Syria; and the departure of the Aleppo Janissary corps to join the forces of the Vizir [Yūsuf Ẓīa al-Dīn Pāshā, Grand Vizier to the Ottoman Sultan].

3. A copy of a letter from Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], to John Spencer Smith, Minister Plenipotentiary in Constantinople [Istanbul], sent from Bagdad and dated 23 September 1799. Jones forwards four letters from Rear-Admiral John Blankett, Commander of the British naval squadron in the Red Sea (IOR/L/PS/9/76/82, 84, and 87), and asks Spencer Smith to pass them on to Lord Elgin, the newly-appointed Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.

Another copy of the same letter is catalogued as IOR/L/PS/9/76/84.
