successful operations carried out between ? ay 8th and 16th
by the snail columns sent out by Sir P. At the same
time he wrote to a ,? ullah at SHIi3A2 making an appeal on religious
grounds, and !U?!#Consul at HIRA# considers that he (Soulet) has
now decided to proclaim a JEHAD.
It is thought that KA AH oan bo relied upon for the
present at any rate to resist the pressure which will undoubtedly
be brought to bear on him to join forces with GOULKT. 'Hie
result of Soule^s attitude was to increase the disturbances
in the KHANI ZINIAN area, and Soulet himself was reported to
the South of GHIRAS with 3,000 to 4,000 kashgais, while a
further 3 f u00 Knshgais wore investing the garrison of FHANI
ZINIAN consisting of 140 3.P.R. with one British officer and
1 British Sergeant. These latter are now reported to have
been murdered by their men, who after handing over their arms
and ammunition to the KA3HGAI returned to SHIRAZ, where they
were placed under arrest by Sir P. Sykes.
»
In tbe meantime (May 24th) Sir P. Sykaa sent a column from
Shiraz under Colonel Orton to attack 300LI5T and hie men
to the South ’3est of Shiraz. . The strength of the Column was
about 1600 Indian regular troops. This Column attacked
the Kashgais on May 25th at D'H SHBI.KH and drove them back to
KHAIiffl KHA3I3 where Soulets omp was shelled and subsequently
occupied. The enemy lost heavily and retired rapidly to
the South Sant. Our column then marched back towards .JHIJAZ.
The last reports from that place are dated lay 26th when t •
situation was summarised as follows:-
The Kashgais though heavily defeated are still dangerous.
The S»P«R« are believed to be untrustworthy and might turn
against us. The KAWALi, though loyal at present, would be
strongly tempted to join t e enemy if ho thought tiiem the
winning side. The
though depressed by
Governor General of PARS (FAR*AN FAR A)
recent events is said to be working hard
