KAR-I-CHAKCHA— Lat. , Long. : Elev.
A village of the Kalat district, Khurasan, near the frontier. It was
once occupied by Persians, but the Turkumans demolished it, and a new
settlement sprang up at Taza-Chakeha, about 10 miles west of the former
one. Both Kar-i-Chakcha and Taza-Chakcha stand on the Khaur stream.
The new settlement is situated at the entrance of the Khaur in a rocky
fissure, | of a mile long. Old Chakcha stood on the plain, and was not
naturally defended ; while the mountains, which close in the former, are
perfectly impassable.— [Petrusevitch.)
KARI KALA— Lat. , Long. ; Elev.
A fort in the Russian province of Trans-Caspia. It lies on the borders
of Khurasan, 30 miles from Kizil-Arvat. Round it is a large extent of cul
tivated land, which is irrigated by the stream upon which the fort is built.
This stream contains about 10 sengs of water. Not long ago Kari Kala
was in the possession of the Persians; but they were unable to retain
possession of it, and it is now occupied by Goklan immigrants from the
Khivan territory to the number of 1,000 families.— [T/iomson.)

A biiluk of Sabzawar in Khurasan. It consists of 8 villages extending
from the foot of the hills north-west of Sabzawar. It is well watered by
springs and kanats, and has wood plantations and orchards. Silk and

KASAULI, or KASAULI KHtf SRTJ— Lat. , Long. ;

A large Turkuman village in northern Khurasan belonging to the dis
trict of Daraghaz. It lies on the road between Lutfabad and Abivard near
the village of Makdum. These Turkumans paid one-tenth of the produce
as revenue to the Persian governor of Daraghaz in the same way as the

One of the nine buluks composing the district of Sabzawar in Khurasan.
It is the level central tract of the district in which the town of Sabzawar
is situated. It is comparatively fertile, well peopled, and productive.
There are many kanats, and fine crops of cotton and silk are raised. The
people are of mixed Arab, Ajam, and Turk race ; the Turks being probably
Baiats. There are 40 principal villages.— [Bellew, Napier.)

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.
The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.
The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.
Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

It also includes the following inserted papers (folios 51 to 60): a memorandum from the Office of the Quartermaster General in India, Intelligence Branch to Lord Curzon, dated 6 December 1895, forwarding for his information ‘Corrections to Volume I of the Gazetteer of Persia’, consisting of articles on the Nishapur district of the province of Khorasan, and the Shelag river.
