A ruined village in Northern Khurasan in the plain north of the natural
oitiess of Ivalat-i-Nadin. In the year 1878 crops were raised here by the
lurkmans of Merv, who rendered to the governor of Kalat one chakdr
ot grain out of every seven gathered ; otherwise the Khan would have de
stroyed the harvest. About 30 families of Aleilis from Kahka in the
vicinity are in the habit of sowing crops here also .—(Petrmevitch )

This is the name given to the bed of the famous lake of Sfstan, now dry,
the surface of which is on the edges closely set with reeds, succeeded by
widely-spread skeletons of tamarisk and stumps of camel grass, while the
intervening spaces are hoary from calcareous and saline deposits. The
northern border of the Hamuns forms the boundary between Sfstan and
Juvain. The lake describes an oval cordon lying obliquely across the
south-west and north-east quarters of the compass. It measures about 70
miles in circumference, and about 10 miles across in its narrowest parts.
It is fed by four large rivers—the Helmand, the Kash-Rud, the Farah-Rud,
and the Hari-Rud. The Helmand emanates from the Kuh-i-Safed in Af
ghanistan, and courses up from south to south-east and east to be joined by
the tributary stream, the Kash-Rud, about the town of Chakan Lur; and
then winds north and empties itself into the great lake. The Farah-Rud
comes from the l£uh-i-Siali in the north on the Herat side, and flows down
north-west to be joined by the Hari-Rud.; then opens into the great lake
about the Kuh-i-Kuch, an elevation situated on the north-west confines
of the lake. Notwithstanding these four great feeders, the water has been
steadily decreasing, and in 1.868 it completely dried up, which must partly

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.

The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.

The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.

Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

It also includes the following inserted papers (folios 51 to 60): a memorandum from the Office of the Quartermaster General in India, Intelligence Branch to Lord Curzon, dated 6 December 1895, forwarding for his information ‘Corrections to Volume I of the Gazetteer of Persia’, consisting of articles on the Nishapur district of the province of Khorasan, and the Shelag river.
