Copy of dispatch No. 2 from HM Ambassador Extraordinary to Persia [Iran], Sir Gore Ouseley, in Tehran, to the Governor-General of the Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. of Fort William, Lord Minto, of 17 January 1812. The dispatch details Ouseley’s support for continuing to pay Persia a subsidy with which to train its armed forces, giving the following reasons:
- Persian perceptions of increased military success as a result of the subsidy
- Securing the position of Crown Prince of Persia, Abbas Mirza, as successor to the Shah
- The danger of Persian enmity threatening British possessions in India
- The role of the subsidy in influencing the Shah’s attitude towards peace with Russia.
The dispatch is enclosed with a cover letter to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. of the East India Company, dated 25 January 1812, and was received on 8 August 1812.
