It is understood that Colonel Sutherland and the 3 further construction
officers will be sent here direct and the 10 ^fistruction officers will
be sent to India for training first and thence as required to Mesopotamia.
We shall probably require 3 survey parties for railway surveys for which
Sutherland and above 3 plus 3 who can be made available here will suffice*
Railways will wire regarding instruments to equip these parties* If sent
Prettyman will be employed. As regards roads the road from ? present
railhead has been put under Lieut-Colonel Gaskell vide my X*9952 July 2nd.
as mentioned in your above quoted wire and in your 62626 M#R*2*A. 622
July 18th survey for extension of Khanikin railway is already in hand*
Information to date indicates that it may be possible to get a line beyond
Qasr I Shirin to foot of Paitak (?) village and thence a ropeway may be
possible to the summit. Will report later as Surveys progress but it will
be some time before any more definite information can be given on this
point*
Director of Railways does not think anything beyond this likely to be
practicable as a war project*
Ollen the ropeway expert whom you sent out with the small transporters
went down with heat stroke before starting reconnaissance and we are
arranging with Muniboard to get out a ropeway expert from India who is an
Employe of Ropeways Limited, Indian agents.
As regards last
Hope to report further on ropeway by end of August,
sentence of your 62611 other routes will be surveyed but I should be glad
to have a reply to My X (?) 261 July 14th regarding ultimate objective
and obligatory points*
