Surest you should carefully consider possibility
of utilizing 60 centimetre line the whole way from Shuraimyah
to Mosul and leaving Driibban line untouched as there is extreme
difficulty in obtaining necessary material for construction of
2 , 6' ,, Railway to Mosul before the end of the year at the very
earliest„
Material of all kinds for 60 centimetre line available
now for shipment and can be sent at onee* This should ensure you
having a line >f some kind through to Mosul before the rains
commence. It will be capable of putting 120 tons a day at
least into Mosul. Equipment we propose to send comprises
20 lb. track on steel sleepers. Wooden sleepers have however
been found preferable on soft formation in Prance• 4-6-0 steam
locomotives with tractive force of 5415 lbs. which in ppractice
in Prance have been found capable of hauling gro..s loads of 100
tons over ifb grades and 40 tons oyer 3% grades, both
compensated. 40 Horse power Petrol Tractors about half as
powerful as steam locomotives on level, but capable of hauling
38 tons gross on 3% compensated grades. Bogie wagons carrying
average load of 6 tons of military stores tare 2-| tons, capacity
10 tons. Yiith this equipment average speed has been found in
Prance to be 5 to 6 miles per hqur. Please wire if you conoa^
as soon as possible and later sifbmit estimate of local
expenditure in which no provision need be made for material
and equinment to be supplied/from England*
