Statement of slave Zulekha bint Aman aged about 40 years recorded
in the Political
Agency
An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent.
, Bahrain#
I was born in Banrain in the house of my master Abdulla bin
Ahmad Al Ghatam. Hy parents were his slaves# I started serving
my master as soon as I was strong enough to work. During my stay
in the house of my master, he used to treat me with kindness but
I was illtreated by his son Ahmad who was continuously quarrelling
with me for no fault on my part# I used to complain against nim
and express my grievance to my master who, oeing an old and feeble
man, had no influence upon his son and thus could not protect me
from him.
Finding it rather impossible to keep up with this state of
affairs, I left my master last year uuring the month of Sha f aban
1351 and put up in the house of one Ahmad bin Issa Al Ghatam.
Before leaving my master he had given me a paper of freedom which
I gave to the Adviser, Bahrain Government. Neither my master nor
his son interfered with my freedom after I had left them except
that my master’s son requested me,through my orother, who is their
slave, to return to them, but I refused to comply with his request.
Hy master died a few days ago.
To ensure my future safety, I nave requested the High
Government to kindly grant me a manumission certificate so that
I may live a free life.
