lour telegram 31 of 4th March, fe are willing to accept
Merrill's services on Sykes’ mission: he will he on probation
for six months and we can offer him pay of Es. 1000 /- per mensem
! with temporary honorary rank of Captain; he must however clearly
understand that he will he unconditionally under Sykes' orders,
1 and can only he given command over Persians and that he can in no
circumstances take command of British Officers or Indian
soldiers. After six months if he is approved definite contract
might he arranged. Please wire if these terms are accepted
end if so, earliest possible date on which he can meet Sykes
and at what place.
Please see my telegram 402 D.S., of 3rd March, regarding
Sykes' mission. Are Persian Govt, taking action therein
suggested ? Could you please arrange for Sax Governor of Kerman
and
Sirdar

The volume contains correspondence regarding the Persian Campaign of the First World War and the movements and activities of the Central Powers in Persia [Iran] between November 1915 and April 1916. The correspondence is particularly concerned with German and Ottoman attempts to infiltrate Afghanistan from Persia, and of ensuring the continued neutrality of both Afghanistan and Persia.
The primary correspondents are the British Legation, Tehran; the British Consulate, Seistan and Kain; and the Government of India.
The volume contains a single folio in French (f 164), a communication from the National Committee for the Protection of the Independence of Persia.
