An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India.
, the 2nd September 1916.
From—The
Political Resident
A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency.
, Aden,
To — L. Robertson, Esq., C.S.I., Secretary to the
Government of Bombay
From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions.
, Political
Department.
The Wahidi Sultan of Balahaf writes that he has received an invitation to go
to Lahej, but that he relies on the British Government and the Kuaiti Sultan. He
has sent in Sail'd Abdallah Abdul Jabbar, an influential Mansab of the Aidaki
and Fadli countries. The latter reports that Ibn Abdallah, the Kathiri Sultan
and the Kuaiti are now friendly (vide last week’s letter) and that recently no
communications have been received in the Hadramaut from the Imam.
The Mansab further reports that the Turks at Lahej made overtures to Aid
Dhiyeb and A1 ’Adam, who inhabit the Lower Aulaki coast, and that on their
return from Lahej, Saiyid
Pasha
An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders.
gave them flags and told them to open a new
harbour at A1 Umair, a place between Haura and Irka ; that the Saiyjd of A hi A1
Baiti of Hajar (Hadramaut) and the Shaikh of Bil id, one Ibn al As-hab, have
also received Turkish flags. #
Theoretically the Lower Aulaki Sultan is responsible for these tracts (other then
Hajar), but he is only a nominal ruler inland ; and as an illustration of this I may
quote the occasion when a schooner landed a party of six Germians at Sheikha
Hurba —vide Weekly Letter dated 18th March 1916.
