moderate British requests are the better the position will
be from which to reject extravagant or impooaible demands
on his part. He will probably return to the charge on the
question of arcs and money, but I have no idea what other
requirements he raay have in his mind. %en tailing him in
general terms that His Majesty’s Government is prepared to
consider a revision ox" the present treat/, it might ba
advisable to instruct the British Consul at Jedda to sound
Ibn Baud judiciously as to the requests which he thinks
of putting forwurc;.
14. Representation in Daaaacua
In view of Ibn Baud’s wish tnat his representative
at Damascus should ba independent of any foreign interference
I do not soq how British control can be allowed to go *by
degrees". Either the control will exist or it will not, and
it can only exist with the consent of Ibn Baud and the
co-operation of his representative. I crugrest, therefore,
that the letter to Ibn Baud conveying the reply of His
Majesty’s (^ovemment on this question should be couched in
generous terms and should not give any indication of a desire
to force upon him an arratigetaent which he no longer desires.
At the same time, it is moot aesir&ble that the British
Consul should continue to maintain close and friendly
contact with the f^/ajdi representative and give him any advice
or as si atone o which he may require.
15. Arranrtriorits for tils Rilirrlm^B.
It is desirable for the oromotion of friendly
relations and to secure his camplefco confidence that Ibn
Baud should be shown clearly that His Majesty’s Government
is ready to give all possible assistance in order that
the pilgrimage may be a good one. Ibn Baud attaches the
utmost importance to a successful pilgrimage.
