X8th August. 1924,
Chief Secretary,. ! C,24
GoTernment Offices,
Jerusalem.
Subject: Wahahl Raid of 14.8.24.
I attach hereto a copy of the Report on the action
furnished by Group Captain MaoKwen and the Report on events
furnished by Mr. A.L. Kirkbride who, in my absence in
Jerusalem, was Acting Chief British Representative. I will
also furnish by next mail a statement of information
collected by the Government from the Wahabi prisoners.
The C.C., R.A.P., Amman, has given me a copy of a
telegram from the Air Ministry which I attach hereto. The
discrepancies are presumably as follows:-
About 9 a.m. on the 14th I spoke by telephone to Peake
Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. who informed me the numbers were estimated at about
1,000 and a little later Mr. Kirkbride phoned me that the
Wahabis had been bombed and machine gunned and were moving
S.M. The telephone was very bad. presumably your wire
referred to was based on this early information which subse
quently proved to be inaccurate.
According to the latest information supplied to Lt.Col.
Peake by one of his officers the local casualties are 121
killed and 26 wounded, both villagers and Beni 3akhr, whilst
the Wahabis lost between 500 and 700. I have reported to
you in another letter the casualties suffered by the Arab
Legion in the neighbourhood of Kaf. (My LL-1 of 17.8.24.)
On the evening of the 16th I learned from the 0.C.,R.A.F.,
that the tracks of a large number of camels moving north had
appeared on the main track leading from Kaff to f scus
between Wednesday, the 13th and Friday, the 15th August,
this information I at once communicated to Capitaine ! upuenet
at Deraa on the evening of the 16th. On the morning of the
17th
