doom in the high salinity of the Bahr ol holh. The provision

d. Fishery Development Co .
It is understood that there is a desire for some hind
of Government project, a Fishery Development Co., to engage in
trawling at the mouth of the Shatt el Arah and the head of the
Persian Gulf
The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran.
. Under present conditions, no strong case could
he made out for importing a fully equipped trawler, which should
best he fitted with refrigerating machinery from abroad. How
ever, the project would seem well worth further investigation
and development after the war, in order to provide Basra and
Baghdad with regular supplies of good quality sea fish.
The regular export of fish is also envisaged to Pales
tine and elsewhere. Such export has taken place in the past,
in ice by lorry across the desert. It rose to a peak at the
rate of 700 tons per year in 1941, but then ceased as a result
of, wartime restrictions. Since then, there has been a spas
modic export of catfish ("Djirri 5 ') which, being classes as
scaleless, are. not acceptable to the Moslems and Jews of Iraq. |
Catfish are particularly suitable for the feeding of British ; -
troops, etc. on account of the absence of bones.
The appearance of a Govt.-controlled or assisted
Fishery Development Co. in Iraq, seems an excellent plan, and
likely to stimulate real interest in the country’s fisheries.
It is that interest, coupled with constructive action, which
is so necessary,,
