^akka Khels and Shinwaris carried off a flock
of about 500 sheep and goats belonging to
Matanm, in the Peshawar district. They were
iollowed up by a party of the Border Military
iolice, who succeeded in recovering the
animals, but the raiders made good their
escape.
Multan, the Anai outlaw, who was
expelled by the Afridis (see Journal for March)
has returned to Tirah from Kabul, where he
was given considerable presents of money and
grain. He threatens to attack the Afridi
elders who were instrumental in his punish
ment last spring, and has already murdered an
Anai elder. He also threatens to resume
raiding into British territory as soon as he can
collect a gang of kindred spirits.
Work on the Kabul River Rail wav has
commenced, and early in October sites for block
houses for the defence of the railway were
selected. Camps for the working parties were
also fixed and arrangements for tribal escorts
made. There has been some difficulty with the
Mohmands in the matter of escorts, the tribe,
before committing themselves, requiring defi
nite information as to how the railway would
affect them in the form of service or increased
allowances. The Agent to the Governor-
General,
North-West Frontier
Region of British India bordering Afghanistan.
Province,
reported that the matter could be arranged by
the raising of the Molimand Levy Corps, which
he had previously recommended (see Journal
for August). He said that this would secure
the good will and co-operation of the tribe, and
he accordingly urged that his proposal should be
sanctioned. He was informed that, pending
a definite decision as to the alignment of the
railway beyond Warsak, a permanent arrange
ment with the Mohmands was not desirable ;
but that, in view of his pressing representations,
be might enlist as many Mohmands for the
future levy corps as present circumstances
required, besides adding some Mohmands to
the Border Military Police.
The recruiting for the extra men for the
Khyber Rifles required for the protection of
the Kabul River Railway (see Journal for
August) has been a great success, all the
companies being filled in less than a month.
