KASHGAR.
On the 17th February, Mr. Macartney
wrote to the Yuen Taotai, asking him to order
the Provincial Governor of Kuchan not
to sanction any proposal of the ex-Mir of
Hunza, Safdar Ali Khan, to move towards the
Yarkand district, which is conterminous with
Indian territory, without reference to Mr.
Macartney. Safdar Ali is said to subsist on
the produce of his flocks, which are in charge
of his brother-in-law in Wakhan.
Mons. deLavrov’s tour to Tashkent and

the towns which he has visited so far, his prin
cipal occupation has been the preparation of
lists of Andijanis, possibly with the idea of
establishing additional Consular Agents. On
arrival at Khokand, he was met only by a
couple of Regs, and the Amban did not go
out to meet him.

The Mehtar intends to betroth his eldest
son to the daughter of Mehtar Jao Abdur
Rahman, Governor of Yasin. He is at present
somewhat estranged from the Khan of Dir,
whom he refused to assist during his recent
conflict in Bajaur.
GILGIT AGENCY An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. .
Owing to the murder of Ismail (see
last Journal), Mehtar Jao Pukhtun Wali was
besieged in his house in Tangir by 600 men,
who w T ere repulsed with a loss of seven killed.
The ir of Hunza has made arrangements
