Missionary Society schools. This persecution,
which is probably connected with the similar
movement in Ispahan (paragraph 15 above),
is supposed to be encouraged by the Vizir of
Ears, who has a personal spite against the
Revd. C. Stileman.
18. {Vide paragraph 23 of the Memo
randum for February.) The people of Fasa,
who have taken sanctuary in the Masjid-i-
Nao, Shiraz, on account of the oppression of the
Prince Governor A Prince of the Royal line who also acted as Governor of a large Iranian province during the Qājār period (1794-1925). -General and his officers,
informed His Majesty’s Consul, Shiraz, that
they had telegraphed to the Shah and the Grand
Vizier, and that, if they did not receive redress,
some of them would take sanctuary in the
Consulate, and others would go to the British
Legation in Tehran.
Many of the inhabitants of Jahrun have
left the place, some going to Bunder Abbas,
on account of the oppression of the authorities.
19. The Jewish distillers of wine and arak
of Shiraz, while they have been compelled to
pay the usual license fee of 4,000 tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. , have
been forbidden to ply their trade. Many of
the Jews are so terrorised that they do not
venture out of their houses. Their women are
subjected to indignities in the streets by the
hangers on of Agha Mirza Ibrahim.
20. Bushire .—The Governor of Bushire
returned from Tangistan on the 6th February
1905 {vide paragraph 24 of the Memoran
dum for February). His Excellency has
arrested the son of the late notorious Ali
Khan, Tangistani, on account of non-payment
of Government revenue amounting to 3,000
tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. (about Rs. 8,000).
21. The Resident recently asked the
Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. Agent on the Arab Coast to warn
the Chief of Shargah and his uncle, Sheikh
Salem, against entering into any agreement
with Monsieur R. Wonckhaus of the German
trading firm for leasing the red-oxide mines
on Abu Musa. The Agent now reports that
the Sheikhs have assured him that they will
do nothing without the Resident’s knowledge
{vide paragraph 26 of the Memorandum for
January).
22. Monsieur Waffelaert, who has been
Director-General of Customs, Bushire, since
May last, has been transferred unexpectedly to
Kermanshah and left Bushire by the Customs
steamer Muzaffer on 13th February. His
transfer so soon after his recent abortive
essay (vide paragraph 19 of the Memorandum
for January) to confiscate the arms of
Turkish passengers en route from Bahrein
to Basrah, combined with the arrival of H.
M.’s ships Vox and Redbreast to await
orders regarding Bahrein, has led the native
public at Bushire to conclude that both
Monsieur 'Waffelaert’s transfer and the pre
sence of the men-of-war at Bushire are the
