have expressed a view that it would be
preferable that these students should not be educated at an
American University, and in Ache son’s D.O. dated 13th November,
1929, it was suggested that they might possibly be sent to
Aligarh. I preferred the idea of Baghdad for the reasons
given in my D.0« ITo. P.S.8 of 14th December 1929, namely that
at Baghdad they would be educated in an Arab atmosphere and
in the Arabic language. Prior went up shortly afterwards
to Baghdad and discussed the matter with the Inspector-General
of Education in ’Iraq and the latter said that he could not
honestly recommend any of the ’Iraq schools with the exception
of the American Mission school run by a man called Van Bss at
Basrah. This school has the reputation of being extremely
well run and on the whole I should prefer Baghdad to Beirut
as being a less ’westernised’ city and education there would
be a great deal cheaper for the State. It is however open to
the same objection as has been raised to Beirut, that it is an
American institution. Further Shaikh Hamad appears to have an
objection to Basrah because some boy who was sent there got
ill and in consequence he has regarded the place as being un-
healthy ever since, and if he was opposed to it he could always
advance the argument that it was a missionary institution. I
accordingly wrote to Prior and asked him whetner it would not
be possible for the Bahrain State to start a secondary school,
since I understood that the stmdents at Beirut were by no means
up to university standard and only required a secondary edu
cation. Further you had suggested that it might be a mis
take to withdraw the batch of students from Beirut and that
