APPENDIX III.
MOHAMMERAH {KHORRAMSHAHR.)
1. General. —Mohamraerah lies on the northern side and
about half a mile within the entrance of the Hafar channel
which is about 40 miles above Fao on the Shatt-el-Arab.
The town was formerly administered by the Sheikh of
Mohammerah under the sovereignty of the Persian Government
He was removed in 1925 and since then the administration has
been carried out by an Iranian Civil Governor who is directly
under the Governor-General of the Province of Khuzistan. '
Only ships drawing 20 feet or less can, except in the short
flood season, cross the Mohammerah bar and enter the Karun
river. Owing to the narrowness of the river channel, vessels
he off the town close to the bank as there is no room to swing
They anchor usually in the Shatt-el-Arab just above the
entrance to the Hafar channel.
Ocean steamers load and discharge cargo by means of lighters.
Half a dozen lighters of barges are usuallv available at Moham
merah and more could be brought down from Basra, if required

2. 11 harves and Jetties. —There is a wharf at the entrance of

of old barges filled with mud and sunk. There are only a few
inches of water alongside it at low tide, and only sufficient water
for flat-bottomed barges and motor boats at high tide, i.e., about

It would not be difficult to place two or three flat-bottomed
barges alongside one another and quickly improvise a landing-
stage almost anywhere on either bank.

The Iranian Navy have five steel jetties with timber decks
