About this record
- Content
The substance of a communication from a Russian officer who has deserted, along with a private, from Sheesha [Shusha] during the war between Persia [Iran] and Russia [Russo-Persian War, 1826-1828]. The officer reported that Sheesha and the surrounding area are occupied by only a small number of Russian troops, who are poorly provisioned and ‘ripe for desertion’. The document also indicates that General Paskevitch [General Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich-Erivansky, Governor-General of Georgia] had visited Geroos [Goris] and left there a number of sick soldiers before departing, and that it is falsely reported that he is at Nukshirvan [Nakhchivan].
This document was originally enclosed, numbered 6 in dispatch No. 64, in the letter of the East India Company Envoy to Persia, Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir, to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. of the East India Company of 5 September 1827 (IOR/L/PS/9/71/38).
