el-Qasab. Beyond here, the coast opens out into a narrow
cultivated tract which becomes more narrow as it swings
westward to Ras el-Baseit. This is a low promontory
projected by a ridge coming from SE. close to and parallel
with the coast, and forming the small bay of Baseit
which faces north. From Ras el-Baseit to Ras Fasori, the
coast generally is bold cliffs with a few sandy beaches, and
about 3 miles from the former there is the open roadstead of
Tsa Begli where steamers call to load chromate of iron. North
eastward of Ras Fasori, the great valley, W. Qandll, breaks
through. Ras Fasdri is a conspicuous promontory and,
from it, the coast to Ras Ibn Hani continues in bold cliffs
and some sandy beaches. About 3 miles from the former
is a small bay, a mile beyond which is a rocky point with
a monastery between two sandy bays. This is Mlnet el-
Kaban, a sheltered spot which can be utilized when com
munication by sea with Ladiqlyeh is impracticable. Ras Ibn
Hani is a narrow peninsula projecting mile westward
the shores of which have been extensively quarried. On its
summit are some ancient remains and on the point is a light
house. On its southern side is a bay 1 mile broad with
a rocky reef almost across the entrance. Ras Ziyareh is the
promontory on which lies the town of Ladiqlyeh with an
ancient port now fast filling up and affording little shelter.
From Ras Ziyareh the coast consists of rocky cliffs with
a sandy beach for about a mile when the plain commences,
and the sandy beach continues for nearly 81 miles ; then
follows a line of low cliffs, for 9^ miles to Ras Beledeh. Thence
there is a long straight beach to Baniyas (Bulunyas), at the
northern base of a volcanic hill 930 ft. high on which stands
Qal‘at el-Marqab. From here to Tartus the coast is mostly
shingly beach with outlying rocks. Ras Husein, 10 miles
from Marqab, is a rocky point. Tartus is a walled coast
town and about a mile N. of it is El-Mlneh, a shallow basin
probably an ancient port where small boats and spongeis
shelter ; on the E. side of the basin is a large building used as
a pottery. Ruwad or Arwad island lies 2 miles SSW. of Tartus.
