Covering letter enclosing an extract of a despatch from the Court of Directors The London-based directors of the East India Company who dealt with the daily conduct of the Company's affairs. no.9, dated 24 January 1852 (f 146). The extract states that financial compensation for 'piracies, homicides and other injuries' should be paid directly to the injured persons, and not to their rulers. The Council expresses its regret that Lt-Col Samuel Hennell [in his capacity as Resident of the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. ] did not follow this rule in communications with the Chief of Sharga [Sharjah] in January 1851.
