The letter is a covering letter, enclosing a letter no.18 of 1853 (folios 301-02), received by Malet from Major Atkins Hamerton, Her Majesty's Consul and the Honourable Company's Agent in the dominions of His Highness the Imam of Muscat, dated, 19 August 1853. In his letter, Hamerton states that he has informed His Highness the Imam of Muscat of the recent case of transport of slaves from Sohar to Qeshm, which violates the treaty between the British Government and the Imam. Hamerton adds that the Imam has assured him that he will undertake to punish the parties involved in the transport of the slaves.

Malet's letter (folio 303) and its enclosure (folios 301-02) have been incorrectly filed in reverse order.
